To date, the inefficient in vivo utilization of antigens and adjuvants has limited vaccine-induced immune protection against VZV infection. Therefore, improving the antigen and adjuvant utilization efficiency is crucial to enhance VZV vaccine performance.

To achieve favorable VZV antigen and adjuvant utilization efficiency, a co-delivery system was constructed based on manganese-coordinated lipid nanoparticles (Mn-LNPs). Palmitic acid was coordinated with manganese through hydrothermal synthesis. Furthermore, 1.6 molar palmitic acid-Mn was added to four commercial lipid nanoparticle components (SM-102:DSPC:CHO-HP:DSG-PEG2000 in a 50:10:37.5:2.5 molar ratio) to encapsulate VZV glycoprotein E (gE) antigen and CpG adjuvant by using a microfluidic chip. Mn-LNP size and morphology were characterised through transmission electron microscopy and quantified the manganese on palmitic acid-Mn through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The performance of the Mn-LNP co-delivery system in enhancing VZV vaccine-induced immune responses was evaluated in a mouse model.

Many modern technologies use light-emitting molecules, so called luminophores. They are utilized, for example, as contrast agents for medical imaging or in solar cells. Particularly promising are compounds such as chromium(III) complexes, also known as "molecular rubies", developed by Prof. Katja Heinze from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. "These molecules can emit light for more than a millisecond. This is ideal for many high-tech applications," explains Ute Resch-Genger from BAM, who leads the DFG project NILE-CHROME 2.0 with Katja Heinze. "But at the same time, they are very sensitive to oxygen and can lose their luminescence."
An interdisciplinary research team has now found a simple solution to protect the sensitive molecules from oxygen. Building on the silica expertise of BAM researcher Isabella Tavernaro, the scientists embedded the luminophores in tiny silica nanoparticles. Nanoparticles made of silicon dioxide (SiO), the main component of quartz glass, are chemically stable and biologically compatible. By encapsulating the molecules, these specially prepared silica nanoparticles form a shield against external influences, preserving their luminescence.

A new study by Brown University researchers suggests that gold nanoparticles—microscopic bits of gold thousands of times thinner than a human hair—might one day be used to help restore vision in people with macular degeneration and other retinal disorders.

In a study published in the journal ACS Nano, the research team showed that nanoparticles injected into the retina can successfully stimulate the visual system and restore vision in mice with retinal disorders. The findings suggest that a new type of visual prosthesis system in which nanoparticles, used in combination with a small laser device worn in a pair of glasses or goggles, might one day help people with retinal disorders to see again.

"This is a new type of retinal prosthesis that has the potential to restore vision lost to retinal degeneration without requiring any kind of complicated surgery or genetic modification," said Jiarui Nie, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institutes of Health who led the research while completing her Ph.D. at Brown. "We believe this technique could potentially transform treatment paradigms for retinal degenerative conditions."

Dispersion hardening using amorphous nanoparticles deployed via additive manufacturing

However, this strengthening mechanism unavoidably adds stress concentrations at the obstacles, instigating crack initiation that hampers ductility. Here, we demonstrate a strategy that replaces the traditional crystalline dispersions with dense amorphous nanoparticles, which is made possible via laser powder bed fusion. Porosity-free copper-based nanocomposites are demonstrated as a prototype, consisting of densely and uniformly distributed amorphousboron–carbide nanoparticles (~47nm in average diameter, up to 12% volume fraction) via an in situ nanofragmentation and melt-quench process. The amorphous nanoparticles act as dislocation sinks, thereby alleviating local stress concentration. They also self-harden along with tensile deformation, promoting strain hardening and therefore homogeneous plastic flow.

Researchers have found these particles in nearly every environment they’ve studied, from Antarctic snow to human blood.

In a new study, scientists have mapped out the molecular mechanisms behind the widespread formation of these tiny plastic fragments. Since plastic first entered the market 75 years ago, its use has become nearly universal—and so has the presence of nanoplastics.

The same properties that make plastic durable and flexible also make it susceptible to breaking down into nanoscale pieces. This breakdown is especially common in the 75-80% of plastics classified as semicrystalline polymers. The research was led by Sanat Kumar, Michael Bykhovsky, and Charo Gonzalez-Bykhovsky, professors of Chemical Engineering at Columbia Engineering.

If you look at a piece of plastic through a powerful microscope, you’ll see alternating layers of hard material and soft material. In the hard layers, plastic molecules are rigidly organized in strong crystal structures. In the soft layers, the molecules lack structure and form a soft, amorphous mass.

The article, titled ”Nanofibers dramatically increase catalytic activity for ultra-low-iridium electrolysis,” describes how Smoltek Hydrogen’s proprietary porous transport electrode (PTE) enables up to a 95 percent reduction in iridium content, without compromising the performance of the electrolyzer cell. Smoltek Hydrogen's solution means that iridium is deposited directly onto an electrically conductive material (the porous transport layer), instead of onto a plastic membrane, which requires only a a very thin layer of iridium. In addition, Smoltek's proprietary carbon nanofibers enable an up to thirty-fold increase in catalytic surface area – an innovation that no other player on the market can match.

How Nanotechnology is Used in Genome Editing
Several types of nanoparticles have been used to deliver gene-editing tools.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used due to their biocompatibility and ease of functionalization. AuNPs can bind to nucleic acids, protect them from degradation, and facilitate their delivery into plant cells. They have been successfully used for small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery, achieving high gene knockdown efficiency in various plant species.3,4

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)—both single-walled and multi-walled—are another promising nanocarrier. They are small, strong, and can penetrate plant cell walls.

Functionalized CNTs have been used to deliver DNA plasmids into plant cells, enabling transient gene expression. They can also electrostatically adsorb small RNA molecules, providing stability and enhancing cellular uptake while reducing off-target effects.5

Lipid-based nanoparticles (LNPs) are particularly effective for CRISPR/Cas9 delivery due to their high payload capacity, self-assembly properties, and ability to encapsulate ribonucleoprotein (RNPs).

Liposomes, a type of LNP, can be engineered with cationic lipids to facilitate the adsorption of negatively charged genetic material, such as sgRNA and Cas9 mRNA. This approach enhances genome-editing efficiency while minimizing toxicity and immune responses in plant cells.

Conventional methods of ultrasound-driven drug transport use heat or cavitation. In contrast, the squeezing interstitial fluid via transfer of ultrasound momentum (SIF-TUM) method is purely mechanical. SIF-TUM uses ultrasound to compress tissue and generate an interstitial fluid stream. When the ultrasound is turned off, the tissue recovers and the stream backflows, creating a fluid motion that can be used to transport drugs and other nanoparticles.

Whereas previous studies investigated this technique theoretically, Ren et al. experimentally demonstrated SIF-TUM, employing the technique to mechanically drive interstitial fluid and transport nanoparticles in ex vivo animal tissues.

They found that the velocity of the transported nanoparticles depends more on the properties of the tissue than on the ultrasound strength. For example, nanoparticles moved about 8.75 times faster in porcine muscle than in chicken breast. This is due to the structural differences of these types of tissue and highlights the potential use of SIF-TUM for controlled drug distribution in dense tissues, such as tumors.

“This non-thermal, non-invasive approach could overcome major limitations in nanomedicine, such as poor penetration in tumors,” said author Baohong Yuan. “By experimentally confirming SIF-TUM, we bridge theory with real-world applications, paving the way for safer, more efficient drug delivery and imaging strategies that are adaptable to different tissue types.”

Gold nanoparticles are promising vehicles for targeted delivery of cancer drugs, offering biocompatibility plus a tendency to accumulate in tumours. To fully exploit their potential, it’s essential to be able to track the movement of these nanoparticles in the body. To date, however, methods for directly visualizing their pharmacokinetics have not yet been established. Aiming to address this shortfall, researchers in Japan are using neutron-activated gold radioisotopes to image nanoparticle distribution in vivo.

The team, headed up by Nanase Koshikawa and Jun Kataoka from Waseda University, are investigating the use of radioactive gold nanoparticles based on 198Au, which they create by irradiating stable gold (197Au) with low-energy neutrons. The radioisotope 198Au has a half-life of 2.7 days and emits 412 keV gamma rays, enabling a technique known as activation imaging.

“Our motivation was to visualize gold nanoparticles without labelling them with tracers,” explains Koshikawa. “Radioactivation allows gold nanoparticles themselves to become detectable from outside the body. We used neutron activation because it does not change the atomic number, ensuring the chemical properties of gold nanoparticles remain unchanged.”

The researchers are designing innovative iron-based nanoparticles, or “nano-adjuvants,” which are small enough to fit thousands on a single strand of hair, to strengthen the body’s immune response against TNBC, according to the University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Unlike other breast cancers, TNBC lacks the proteins targeted by some conventional treatments, making effective therapy a significant challenge, according to Prof. Yu Chengzhong from the AIBN.
