Speech and Swallowing Disorders

Speech & Swallowing Disorders encompass a range of conditions affecting communication and the safe passage of food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. These disorders may result from neurological conditions, structural abnormalities, developmental delays, trauma, or head and neck surgeries. Common speech issues include articulation disorders, apraxia, dysarthria, and voice disorders, while swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) can lead to malnutrition, aspiration, and reduced quality of life. Evaluation involves clinical assessments, videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Treatment includes speech-language therapy, compensatory strategies, dietary modifications, and, in some cases, surgical intervention. Multidisciplinary collaboration among ENT specialists, speech-language pathologists, and dietitians is essential. Early diagnosis and individualized therapy are key to restoring functional communication and safe, effective swallowing.
