Alberto Nico is a lawyer and AI governance specialist focusing on algorithmic accountability in high-risk data processing, particularly in public services and digital health. He is a PhD candidate in Law at the University of Bari “A. Moro”, where his doctoral research examines Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property, with a specific interest in generative AI, authorship, and the governance of AI-driven decision-support systems. He currently serves as data protection officer, legal consultant and AI governance specialist for several private and public bodies. He is also researcher for Italian private AI R&D institute. In these roles, he designs and reviews governance frameworks, DPIAs, and risk-mitigation strategies for AI systems handling sensitive, biometric, and health data, ensuring compliance with GDPR and alignment with human-rights standards (non-discrimination, privacy, and effective remedy). Alberto has authored a monograph and several peer-reviewed publications on AI and intellectual property, ethical-legal principles for AI-based educational assessment, and the regulation of generative AI. He also contributes as an IP and new-technology expert in European initiatives on transforming health and care systems, promoting trustworthy, rights-based AI and data governance in digital health ecosystems.
