He is a Full Professor and holds degree qualifications in computer science, education and information sciences. Professor Mutula is currently the Founding Dean and Head: School of Commerce at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  Prof Mutula is a NRF rated scientist. He has produced several scholarly publications to his credit including journal articles, books and chapters in books in such areas as Digital Economies, ICT4D, SMEs and E-readiness; Data governance, open science, Knowledge Management, e-government; and The Diaspora. Prof Mutula’ s publications are widely cited. He has h-index of 39, i10 index of 136, and 6584 citations in Google Scholar. He has externally examined 43 PhD theses in 17 universities nationally and internationally. He has supervised to successful completion, 53 PhDs, 14 Masters and 9 Post Docs. He has served on several international editorial boards. Prof Mutula has been awarded several national and international scholarly excellence awards in his field by universities and scholarly publishing societies such as Emerald, African Network of Information Ethics (ANIE)/Capurro Fiek Foundation Germany), Historical Society (US) and others. In 2024 he was awarded the Highly Ranked Scholar status among the top of 0.05% by the global ScholarsGPS.  This award is informed by the impact and outstanding quality of his scholarly contributions. In particular, Prof Mutula was ranked #2 worldwide in the specialty “Digital Economy”.
