Dr. Ahmad Basheer is a senior lecturer in science education at the Arab Academic College for Education in Israel – Haifa. He holds several key administrative and academic positions at the college, including Vice President of the College, Dean of Academic Studies and Head of the Department for Continuing Education and Teacher Training. He is also a member of the Appointments Committee and the Academic Council. In addition, he is lectures in the Chemistry Department for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and supervises numerous graduate students.
Dr. Basheer has led various international projects in collaboration with the European Union, most recently serving as the manager of the PRESS Project, which promotes context-based science education for sustainability. He also chaired the Chemistry Department at the college from 2009 to 2019.
He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc., and a teaching certificate in Chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1997–2002) and earned his Ph.D. with distinction in Physical Organic Chemistry from the same university (2007). He completed postdoctoral research in Asymmetric Organic Chemistry at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa (2008–2010). During this time, he received the Excellence in Research Award in Chemistry from the Israel Chemical Society for outstanding Ph.D. students (2007), and a prestigious Shulich Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry, Technion (2008–2010). He was also awarded a research grant from the Mofet Institute for developing curricula in Green Chemistry and Sustainability (2019).
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Basheer has published over 30 articles in international scientific journals, as well as educational publications and local articles in the fields of Chemistry and Science Education. He has participated in leading international science education conferences such as ESERA, ECRICE, and others. He has also served as a visiting lecturer at several European universities in Austria, Germany, Ireland, and beyond.
His main research interests include physical-organic chemistry, asymmetric organic chemistry, education for sustainability, environmental and social justice, green chemistry in education “sustainable chemistry”, context-based teaching and learning in chemistry and science, students’ alternative conceptions and learning difficulties in science, and strategies for diagnosing misconceptions to improve understanding in chemistry.
